LaMontagne is one of the most celebrated heroes in the genre, having created eight albums, including Trouble (2004), Till the Sun Turns Black (2006), Gossip in the Grain (2008), God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise (2010), Supernova (2014), Ouroboros (2016), Part of the Light (2018), and Monovision (2020).
His story is truly inspiring. He was born in New Hampshire and was part of a family of six children. After graduating, he moved to Maine, where he found work in a shoe factory. One day, after waking up, he heard a Stephen Mills song on the radio and, stimulated by it, decided that he wanted to pursue a career in music. He started performing in 1999.
His career really took off when businessman Ron Clayton first encountered LaMontagne at a Maine music festival. Ron, impressed by Ray, put him in touch with Chrysalis Music Publishing. The meeting culminated in Ray's first album, Trouble, which was released in 2004. The album was an international success, selling more than 500,000 copies.
His style is phenomenal, and people have compared him to the likes of Tim Buckley, Ryan Adams, Nick Drake Beck, and even Otis Redding. The critics have really taken notice, as he has already won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album for God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise, a MOJO Award, and three Boston Music Awards, just to name a few. His abilities are truly outstanding, and there are no signs of him slowing down.
His music has had a huge impact on pop culture too, being featured in several television series and movies such as ER, One Tree Hill, I Love You, Man, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Conspirator, and many more.
He is a philanthropist too, performing at charity concerts such as KYSR's Lounge for Life, and he also auctioned his guitar for its charity auction. All the proceeds went to breast cancer research. He also assisted in raising funds for victims of a flood in Nashville, Tennessee.
